CLUG Meeting June 5 – 6:15 to 8:30 PM – Nicholls Family Library

You can download Tomas’s CLUG Presentation at: https://lab.florian.ca/ and those who attended appreciated how pertinently he filled in the group with his questions and answers. Interesting talk, it made you think.

Tomas Florian has previously done a couple talks at Calgary Linux Users Group (VoIP and Ceph). This should prove to be an enjoyable evening. Thanks again Tomas for giving this talk! Note: seating limited to 40.

Last scheduled meeting before Summer break!

Topic: AI for beginners from a beginner – Open Source AI for Generalists

Recently I saw a demo of AI technology that could count the number of people in a security camera video feed.  I thought it was pretty cool and started Googling “how did they do that?”. First I came across scientific papers that require you to have an advanced math degree to understand, but soon I stumbled across a whole other class of open source projects that are pre-packaged and ready to go with zero math.   If you can handle the level of complexity roughly equivalent to compiling a Linux program from source, you can also start using powerful AI today.

I’m sure it will be interesting to many of your members.

TOPIC:

FreedomBox home servers solution
By design, setup and use is goal-ed to be easy and similar to installing APPS on a smart phone to federate all your devices and friends.

This Pure Debian project has matured with a thriving forum.
Besides buying the commercial version you can also try out a similar image of the FreedomBox OS on your own repurposed hardware.

My talk will strive to give you a feel for what starting out as FreedomBox Pioneer could look like.

https://freedombox.org

We will need to brush up on GnuGPG to create our own dynamic certificates.

Those at the last meeting asked me to look into this. The advanced tools have potential for online meetings and collaborations.

Hope to see you at meeting.
Thanks
Mel

Build a mini open source cloud to monitor/manage a larger vmware based cloud

December 25th, 2018

Calgary Linux Users Group Meeting

  • Date: February 6, 2019 — 5:45 to 7:30 PM
  • Place: Central Library 4-20F Meeting Room. (seating for 8)
  • Address: 800 3 Street SE, Calgary, AB T2G 2E7

I have been thinking of doing a presentation on some work I’ve done:

Using SaltStack to build personal private clouds on bare metal. Through the presentation I can sprinkle snippets of code from:

Raymond Burkholder
  • debian pxe boot files
  • how I use Saltstack to custom build pxe boot files
  • using iproute2 for kernel based network configurations
  • using Open vSwitch for layer 2 switching
  • using Free Range Routing for layer 3 route distribution with BGP, EVPN, anycast
  • using LXC for containers (rather than docker)
  • maybe some nftables configurations for basic security
  • how redundancy and resiliency is built into the solution

This configuration was used to build a mini open source cloud to monitor/manage a larger vmware based cloud.

My background can be found at https://blog.raymond.burkholder.net/

Innovating your own solutions in GNU Linux.

Moved the backup data for Mint time shift.

I asked what the Dec 12 meeting was going to be about? The response:

Yes, I have the latest LTS Linux Mint but is anyone able to show us something else interesting or even better? I happen to have been looking into a Ubuntu flavor a customer of mine specifically requested.

Rather than do another Linux Distribution demo I took the opportunity to fix or repair a multi-boot laptop of mine that was developing some issues.

My chosen solution may also demonstrate some of the concepts well.
Oh, also I am ecstatic at having a working interim solution towards my goals.

Innovating your own solutions in GNU Linux.

Calgary Linux Users Group Meeting 2018 – Dec 5 (Wed)

December 2nd, 2018

Who would like to meetup Downtown and try out the New Modern Main Calgary Public Library facilities?

They have 30 meeting rooms of various sizes so in future it could be feasible to have multiple channels of interest going on at the same time if desired?

image of Room 3-19C ===>

Rooms have to be booked by Calgary Public Library members who agree to the CPLibrary and CLUG rules.

Date: Dec 5, 2018  —  booked from 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM

Place: Central Library 3-19C Meeting Room. (seating for 12 and wall mount TV HDMI cable).

Address:  800 3 Street SE, Calgary, AB T2G 2E7  just across 3rd street SE, East & south of City Hall train station.

See Map below! zoom in for detail.

Getting there:

Calgary Transit seems the best way to get there.

Unless you have your own parking spot you may find may find the Parking Authorities costs high in the downtown core. There is a drop off point [map pin] and special needs elevator on the south east side via 8 Ave SE, across from a small pay for lot. Also another larger parking lot starting a block more to the east.

Image elevator entrance and exit above near drop off point at SE side:

Read any parking instructions  carefully and be prepared to pay. I might be walking from outside the downtown area. Good exercise for me:)

Monthly Meeting

This room is in the smaller building north of the main building.

Time: 5:45 – 8:00 PM

6:00 show is OK too.

I have to smile when I think of the core group that has showed up. Thank you!

There is much to discuss in the coming weeks.

  1. Nurturing club collaboration with better tools and methods. Goal being to make less strain for contributors.
  2. Things that really interest and help you that the club would like to hear about.
  3. The next Meetup venue.

There was no interest in the topic of AGM so it’s not on the agenda

Anyone wanting more timely updates of meeting notices, we can talk about sharing the load.

See you at the meeting.
