April 7, 2014 – CLUG Meeting

Meeting  19:00 – 21:00

Likely in room 426 – will try and firm up tomorrow.

At this point I would like to say a few words with Mel stepping down.  It is a shame that it has come to this for such a small organization that is crying out for volunteers.  I personally will miss Mel’s energy.  We don’t always see eye to eye nor should we expect everyone to agree.  We should however respect the individual and the energy that they voluntarily put forward.  To all the past executives and members that have given freely of their time in giving talks, answering posts, solving problems, holding workshops.  As a collective – we are not paid to do this, we do it out of passion for open source and helping the community.  This gift of time becomes even more precious when life pressures consume what free time we have left, postponing obligations to continue the gift of time.

It is not our place to judge whether the job was adequate or it should have been done this way or whether it was done wrong.  People have given their gift of time – if you don’t like it, it was a gift, do with it as you will but don’t criticize the gift.  For those that are quick to judge, what was your latest gift.  If you don’t like the direction the group is taking, step up and do something about it.  This does not mean come up with an  idea and some volunteer group will do the work – I suggest that you own the idea an make it yours.

As an aside, a group of us did meet last week to discuss the future and the topic of doing a pod cast was put forward.  We discussed briefly how this can be accomplished without everyone having to meet.  There is not reason why you can not participate remotely either as part of the discussion or as a passive listener.  I hope we can flush out this idea some more at the next meeting.

Topics or questions I would like to bring up or ask at the monthly meeting:
  • Can mostly everyone show up? That’s the rest of us, not just the hard line coders. Are we are missing out on the 98 % of potential members?
  • What are our motives?
  • Should we all be publishers in this digital age?
  • What are the best/new ways we can think of to collaborate as a club (LUG)?
  • How easy is it for us mortal users to get up to speed on Pelican?  How about a review of getting used to using Github?

See You All at the meeting!

We need to decide who is stepping forward as executive.

I hope to see a strong and vibrant club emerge from this AGM, and will support what the membership and new Executive Board decides to do.

I will have served two years as president and will be announcing my resignation before the end of March 2014.

In the event that an executive can not be established, the club will be unable to exist. Any remaining club assets would then have to be donated to some appropriate registered charity. See SECTION 13.0: Dissolution, in the CLUG bylaws.

Talk by Kin Wong

IT Analyst | University of Calgary – DTC

One Business Application of Gimp and Inkscape

Scenario – We have architectural drawings to a building in PDF format.  The Architects don’t answer my calls and even if they did, they would want lots of dollars for the Autocad drawings.  The as-built already cost some $30K.  The money spent on the emergency evacuation signage are incomplete and some are wrong, we don’t have way of finding signage that are customized to location, and we rent space but don’t have any maps or illustrations for marketing materials.  Of course we are also cash constrained otherwise if you throw enough money at a problem, it goes away.

Solution – Using 2 open source tools for graphics (this spells free on 3 levels – free in terms of cost, free in terms of choice, and free to use on all 3 major platforms (Linux, Windows and OSX), we can take what we have and generate what we need.  You also don’t need a lot of talent but you will need some patience.  The tools we are going to be using are Gimp and Inkscape.

The Open Community Minded River Wave Design Project

Speaker: Jacob Quinlan – Alberta River Surfing Association

Jacob agreed to give a talk about their plans to drop river wave generating hardware with a permitted construction time of September 3-15 in the Kananaskis this year.

Jacob told me their mission is: “build the world’s best river surfing wave, freely share the design and construction know-how to make it as easy as possible for surfing to occur in a river near you”

Surf Anywhere is looking to computer modeling  (CFD) to accelerate the way towards reaching these goals. Jacob is already stoked about our clubs interest and looking forward to meeting everyone at the meeting.
