CLUG Meeting June 5 – 6:15 to 8:30 PM – Nicholls Family Library

You can download Tomas’s CLUG Presentation at: https://lab.florian.ca/ and those who attended appreciated how pertinently he filled in the group with his questions and answers. Interesting talk, it made you think.

Tomas Florian has previously done a couple talks at Calgary Linux Users Group (VoIP and Ceph). This should prove to be an enjoyable evening. Thanks again Tomas for giving this talk! Note: seating limited to 40.

Last scheduled meeting before Summer break!

Date: June 5, 2019 — 6:15 to 8:30 PM

Location:

Nicholls Family Library
Nicholls Family Library Program Room — (on second floor) seating – 40
1421 33 Street SW

Calgary AB T3C 1P2

The Nicholls Family Library is located in Westbrook CTrain Station.
There is parking near the building and drop off area near NNW side.

This Library’s web site seems able to give directions:

Topic: AI for beginners from a beginner – Open Source AI for Generalists

Recently I saw a demo of AI technology that could count the number of people in a security camera video feed.  I thought it was pretty cool and started Googling “how did they do that?”. First I came across scientific papers that require you to have an advanced math degree to understand, but soon I stumbled across a whole other class of open source projects that are pre-packaged and ready to go with zero math.   If you can handle the level of complexity roughly equivalent to compiling a Linux program from source, you can also start using powerful AI today.

I’m sure it will be interesting to many of your members.

FreedomBox home servers solution
By design, setup and use is goal-ed to be easy and similar to installing APPS on a smart phone to federate all your devices and friends.

This Pure Debian project has matured with a thriving forum.
Besides buying the commercial version you can also try out a similar image of the FreedomBox OS on your own repurposed hardware.

My talk will strive to give you a feel for what starting out as FreedomBox Pioneer could look like.

https://freedombox.org

We will need to brush up on GnuGPG to create our own dynamic certificates.

Those at the last meeting asked me to look into this. The advanced tools have potential for online meetings and collaborations.

Hope to see you at meeting.

Calgary Linux Users Group Meeting 2018 – Dec 5 (Wed)

Sunday, December 2nd, 2018

Who would like to meetup Downtown and try out the New Modern Main Calgary Public Library facilities?

They have 30 meeting rooms of various sizes so in future it could be feasible to have multiple channels of interest going on at the same time if desired?

image of Room 3-19C ===>

Rooms have to be booked by Calgary Public Library members who agree to the CPLibrary and CLUG rules.

Date: Dec 5, 2018  —  booked from 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM

Place: Central Library 3-19C Meeting Room. (seating for 12 and wall mount TV HDMI cable).

Address:  800 3 Street SE, Calgary, AB T2G 2E7  just across 3rd street SE, East & south of City Hall train station.

See Map below! zoom in for detail.

Getting there:

Calgary Transit seems the best way to get there.

Unless you have your own parking spot you may find may find the Parking Authorities costs high in the downtown core. There is a drop off point [map pin] and special needs elevator on the south east side via 8 Ave SE, across from a small pay for lot. Also another larger parking lot starting a block more to the east.

Image elevator entrance and exit above near drop off point at SE side:

Read any parking instructions  carefully and be prepared to pay. I might be walking from outside the downtown area. Good exercise for me:)

I have to smile when I think of the core group that has showed up. Thank you!

There is much to discuss in the coming weeks.

  2. Things that really interest and help you that the club would like to hear about.
  3. The next Meetup venue.

There was no interest in the topic of AGM so it’s not on the agenda

Anyone wanting more timely updates of meeting notices, we can talk about sharing the load.

Parking: For those want to travel by car

The Lot on the east side of the Library building does extend to the West side so you should likely find a spot. You will have to leave the way you came in. I did not see an entrance on the west lot. Handicapped Parking is available.

Place: Louise Riley Library — Meeting Room 1

This meeting room is located across the parking lot in a separate building from Louise Riley Library. The address is 1920 14 Ave NW. My mark pin did not stick yet so just look for the building a little north of the Library

Time: 5:40 to 8:00 PM booked

Meeting to start by 6:00 PM

Main:

  • A Very Popular Linux Mint Computer Operating System – Programs Included

An honest commentary  from John who was searching for a solid replacement form Windows 7 before support is pulled by MS

More:

We have started exploring for our selves rather than telling others what to do.

  • Tinkering at electronic tools toward collaborative meetings….
  • Inclusivity goes well with GNU/Linux, FLOSS, variety and collaboration
  • No need to discourage peoples silos of interests
  • safety/security concerns
  • We are see a diverse group starting to build. Mm, this should be interesting

Calgary Linux Users Meeting – Jan 3, 2018

Friday, December 22nd, 2017

Place: Central Library

  • Meeting Place: Central Library, Meeting Room 1
  • Street address: 616 Macleod Trail S.E.
  • Calgary AB T2G 2M2

Time: 18:00 till 19:30 Jan 3, 2018 (Wed)

(This Central Library closes at 20:00 (8:00 PM).)

Theme: How do I get started.

  • Smaller groups have been meeting informally and more often then just the monthly meeting, in coffee shops friendly to digital connection or sometimes privately at some ones home.
  • Meeting at the Library has worked well to let every one see what is being shown by use of their large screen TV display for those who have problems seeing clearly over someones shoulder.
  • People showing up say they’re at a beginning level yet are not a stranger to the computer. We have a range of users so those interested in the command line or server side should be able to link up too.
  • Bring your own view points and lets share ideas. Thank you for respecting other points of view
  • Tell us your favorite applications. Fresh new ones are showing up in our modern GNU/Linux distributions.

See you at the meeting!
