Time to restart?

Topics: Topics: LUG interests. For years now I have been asking you where you (clug) want to go. What you want and what you do not want. I have been listening.

 Bring your own food.

Do some people consider CLUG  dead? Leave it lie.

What do I mean by the club doing a restart (new life)? The club seems to have suffered a down trend that was first noticed in some meetings in 2008 where there were only a little over  80 in attendance. I remember when all seats were filled and some people were standing.

Around that same time some were moaning loudly about why did they have to change the GPLv2 in version 3. I listened to Richard Stallman’s (RMS) passionate speech  about GPLv3 but could not seem to get the full reasoning behind it, that made sense to me anyway.

Pulled away with some life busyness for a while and then about a half year ago while researching about Open-source licensing I came across some law university lectures by Eben Moglen. There I found out it was Eben and Richard wrote the GPLv3 up in defense against software patents attacks to the GPLv2. Eban also stressed it was business paying most of the bills because they were being restricted (prevented) from making money by restrictions imposed on how to use that essential modern business tool, the computer.

Before you get upset and erroneously think I want GPLv3 only, I want to point out what else Eben said about making money and the collaborative system that he said needed protection similar to an ecological system. If damage is done it is difficult and takes much time to correct. The bottom line: companies who protect this open source ecology best, make far more than the others. Embarrassing that it took me at least 3 or 4 years to finally  start getting it. So I am against wasting time being against certain licenses. But just measure FOSS ecology protection that makes everyone money.

Quote: Eben Moglen

“The idea that we are anti-capitalist is a stupid
idea. Free software is not anti-capitalist. Capitalism now makes a great deal of
money out of free software and it voluntarily pays us money to make, improve and lawyer for it.”

Now that I got one thing off my chest, we can get on with how I purpose to restart.CLUG.CA

Answer: I am not doing it by myself! We are going to have to come up with ways to collaborate together with networking. Our new major sponsor proposed supplying us a nice server on the super-net that we can have access to. I would like to thank Bojan and Ben for giving such a complete tour of their modern ISO compliment plant and warehouse. Their goal and results turn out to be much greener than I had imagined.

What I have meant about CLUG is that I believe in all of you… as individuals… Not the old club. Do you believe in yourself?

When you are ready I would like to get some volunteer authors to write in your spare time and publish when ready about your interests in FOSS.

I you can attend see you there. if not, at the next one?

Thanks

Melvin
