My experience with this was installing a tweaked version of Ubuntu (Hardy) (8.04) back in the fall on a eee 1000. Worked like a charm, wireless and wired networking worked right away. Apparently, this project has morphed into easypeasy: http://www.geteasypeasy.com/

If it's ubuntu, you might want to consider trying the 9.04 Beta of
their Netbook distribution. http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/jaunty/beta
Or you can wait for the Release later this month.
Right now I'm running ubuntu 8.10 with a custom EeePC Kernel on my 1000H.
