You should be OK. I ran Linux off an external USB HDD for 12 months at<br>
one point (long story). The only element of risk is the USB device<br>
being supported. The USB mass storage devices are quite well supported<br>
under most modern flavours of Linux so I'd give it a shot - if it didn't<br>
work then return for a different maker.<br>

Check google too - if there are specific incompatibilities you'll find<br>
them.<br>
