This sounds vaguely familiar.  Where you just getting out of the car 
after a long driving stretch?  Did you bend the device in half?  I'm 
just asking to see if I could discern a pattern here... :)

As for access points, the Google Nexus S can behave as a mobile hotspot. 
  So, if you have a decent data plan you have Internet as long as you 
are in Cell range.
