Jesse: I just re-read what I wrote again, and think the last couple of 
paragraphs, and the one near the beginning starting with "A few years 
back, the state of Massachusetts..." might be applicable to your goal.

That article wasn't really written with the same goal you have, so 
covers other topics than what you need.  But Massachusetts reasons for 
moving from the proprietary format are bang on.  And the issue of who 
controls your data - you, or the vendor of the file format.

One would think that a simple argument of "I do not OWN MS Word, so 
cannot comply with your request to use the Word file format.  However, I 
can produce and ODF based file, or a PDF." should do the trick. 
Afterall, how can a professor "demand" what you do with your computer 
system.

I just did a google search for "reasons not to use ms word", but that 
wasn't very helpful...  So let us know what you find.

 That's an interesting article. Nice work Shawn! However, my issue is that
 I've had a couple professors that require submissions in Word documents.
 This pisses me off because it is a proprietary format and because I don't
 use MS Office, so there's no guarantee that my formatting will convert
 correctly. This can be fairly critical when I'm required to submit a paper
 of a certain length and in a certain style. I'm looking for some good
 articles to throw at them in the hopes of changing this policy.
