Without knowing more it is difficult to help any further. Hopefully the
sites I listed earlier give him a good place to start.
Years ago, when I was working at Shaw, I wrote a php front end to a
number of common *NIX utilities to help troubleshoot weird problems. It
occurred to me on the way home that this is one approach to tracking
down the problem. Have a web front end to control the traffic
generating apps that are at his home/office, and a laptop to log the
data in the field (ssh can be a pain over high latency links, its why I
wrote the php front end in the first place).
