to trick people into registering earlier so the organizers know how many
people to roughly expect (as shawn pointed out). given pre-regs, you can
pretty safely extrapolate expectations for final numbers. this is a very
common way of going about things for events ... charge for admission at the
door, but make it so amazingly easy to get in for free that nobody actually
does (at some events, i've seen bins of "get in free" cards at the entry to
the event ;) just so the event team gets some early data =)
