Michael, 
I guess it's all relative. Installing a dual boot linux/XP laptop took
me all of five minutes. No need to remove the windows installtion;
just reduce the size of the NTFS partition and add the linux partition
layout with fdisk. Like I said, all my hardware was configured right
out the box...Even the miniPCI card and the sound.
I even wrote a script that updates the whole sha-bang every couple of weeks...
