The three "R"'s are "Reduce, re-use, and recycle", in that order. A
laptop instead of a desktop is reducing; there's ca. nine lb. of lead
in your typical desktop monitor. LCD's aren't nearly so gluttinous.
If you can turn an old system into _something_ else (remember, laptops
come with built-in UPS's :-), that's good reusing. Beowulf clusters
for everyone! You wouldn't believe the prices at Computer Surplus for
used drives. Pocket change!
Once something absolutely, positively, has reached EOL, that's when
you have to either choose to use it as a boat anchor, or recycle it.
Either that, or all the LUGs should get together and rent a container
to ship it all off to Africa. There's lots of people out there trying
to get their hands on this stuff if only we can get it to them.
Any technology distinguishable from magic is insufficiently advanced.
