I checked with Suse Control Center - ncurses was installed, but ncurses-devel 
wasn't.  So, I installed this and saw the exact same problem.

Turned out that I had to start from scratch with the autogen.sh script, after 
installing ncurses-devel.  Right now I've made it past the part that was 
failing - still compiling though....
