June 2nd Meeting Notes

June 2nd, 2010 Meeting Notes

We looked at new releases:
Slackware 13.1 - http://slackware.com
Fedora 13 - https://fedoraproject.org/
Vinux 3.0 (Linux for the Visually Impaired) - http://vinux.org.uk/

We took a look at the photography program F-Spot, and how easy it was to sync up with external services. We also took a look at the Canon Hack Development Kit, which allows you to extend your Canon camera at the software level.

There's a new Memory Express in Dalhousie

There was a discussion on processors, and how the Intel Nehalem i5 and i7's rock for number crunching. Also, since AM3 boards are becoming common, if you've got an AM2+ socket, the quad-core AMD Phenom is CHEAP

We checked out hardware prices at http://newegg.ca (if it's not in the Canadian warehouses, they ship from the States)

Craig McLean let us know that the Amateur Radio talk should be ready in August or September. As for what will be demonstrated, it will either be satellite or HF radio.

We talked about the Android phone, as well as the Symbian OS

Google removed Microsoft machines from their offices. We looked at http://gonegoogle.com to find out how much Microsoft could save by going Google, with the site crashing later in the meeting.

There was a brief look at Smokescreen, which loads Flash by using Javascript and HTML5, effectively getting around the Apple blockade.

There was a laptop set up showing off the graphical mode of the Links web browser, which uses SVGAlib, making it perfect for machines that don't run X Windows.

As the meeting was wrapping up, we glanced at two different solutions for maintaining desktops for a business environment: SpaceWalk and Puppet. We'll keep our fingers crossed that someone will do a presentation on these!

Here's some ideas for presentations at the next meeting that we came up with. If you know a little about these subjects, or want to do some research, feel free to dig in and present your findings at the next meeting (June 7th, 2010)!

  • RAID and playing with mdadm
